On a loaded Kentucky basketball roster, freshman guard Charles Matthews decide to transfer.

John Calipari has brought the Kentucky Wildcats basketball program back in to national prominence with his incredible recruiting. Knowing that it was always going to be tough to crack that starting lineup, freshman guard Charles Matthews has decided to transfer from the program.

Matthews was one of only four Wildcats who played in all 36 games last season, but the freshman only averaged 10.3 minutes per contest. His 1.7 points and 1.6 rebounds per game left plenty to be desired, but Matthews is a hard-working player who had some nice value at the defensive end of the court.

“I believe he is going to be a productive college player who has the ability to play at the next level,” Calipari said in a released statement. “I know Charles’ best basketball is ahead of him, and while I’m saddened to see him go, I support his decision and will help in any way I can.”

Matthews entered Kentucky a four-star and 48th-ranked recruit in the 2015 class by the Rivals prospect rankings. While that would be good enough to be a big-time contributor on a huge majority of teams around the nation, it was always going to be tough for him to get playing time with top ten talent constantly following Calipari in to Kentucky.

Matthews is a strong basketball player who is going to make a difference in whatever program he ends up attending.

In his eight years as the head coach of the Kentucky basketball program, Matthews will only be the fifth player to transfer under Calipari.
