The Cleveland Cavaliers have agreed to a sign and trade deal so that Matthew Dellavedova can join the Milwaukee Bucks.

After playing a part of the success of the Cavaliers the past couple of seasons, including two appearances in the NBA Finals, Dellavedova increased his value with executives around the league.

As a restricted free agent, Dellavedova initially had signed an offer sheet with the Bucks on a four-year contract worth $38.4 million. The Cavaliers were not able to match that, so the two sides decided to come together on a sign and trade instead.

Statistically, Dellavedova didn’t exactly blow anyone away. Last season, he averaged 7.5 points, 4.4 assists and 2.1 rebounds. However, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound point guard is a scrappy energy player who takes a lot of pride in being a pest on defense.

In order to acquire Dellavedova, the Bucks are sending the draft rights to Albert Miralles to the Cavaliers. The 6-foot-10, 240-pound center is already 34 years old and is highly unlikely to ever come to the NBA. Cleveland is also sending cash considerations to Milwaukee.

By doing a sign and trade, the Cavaliers acquired a $4.8 million trade exception. The move helps them acquire veteran small forward Mike Dunleavy from the Chicago Bulls. Dunleavy was made expendable when the Bulls agreed to terms with Dwyane Wade in free agency.

Milwaukee wants to experiment more next season with Giannis Antetokounmpo playing the point guard position. He showed flashes at the position last season. The coaching staff needed a player who can defend opposing point guards while also being able to spread the floor for Antetokounmpo with outside shooter. Dellavedova fits the bill.

The loss of Dellavedova means that the Cavaliers have a big void at the backup point guard position. While the team could use rookie Kay Felder in the role, a contending team might not want to take that chance, so a veteran point guard could be signed for cheap in free agency.

Dellavedova has earned himself a very nice payday and is set to move on to the next chapter of his NBA career with the Bucks now.
