The Colorado Rockies have called up top prospect outfielder David Dahl, but is he a must-add for fantasy baseball owners?

On Sunday, the Colorado Rockies made a move to give themselves a look at the future. As reported by the Denver Post, outfielder David Dahl has been called up for the start of an interleague series against the Baltimore Orioles Monday night.

Dahl’s presence will further fuel trade speculation surrounding Rockies’ outfielders Carlos Gonzalez and Charlie Blackmon, with a week to go before the non-waiver trade deadline. But should fantasy baseball owners look to add Dahl immediately?

Dahl is worth of a major league promotion, hitting .484 with five home runs and 16 RBI over 16 games this year since being promoted to Triple-A. Combined with his time in Double-A prior to that, Dahl has a .314/.394/.569 slash-line with 18 home runs, 61 RBI and 17 stolen bases over 92 games (400 plate appearances) this year.

With a road series in an American League park coming, the designated hitter spot is open for Dahl from Monday-Wednesday. It’s hard to see the Rockies calling him for that brief of a stint though, so Dahl is in line to possibly land in center field (212 minor league starts) or right field (27 minor league starts) as a starter going forward. Those are the spots currently held down by Blackmon and Gonzalez respectively, so Dahl’s promotion is an easy connection of the dots that one of the two will be on the move.

Dahl’s ownership rate in Yahoo! fantasy league has risen over 20 percent over the last day, but he is still very widely available overall (23 percent owned). Ideally Blackmon or Gonzalez will be traded soon, but Dahl is still worth adding in NL-only and deeper mixed leagues right away. In shallower mixed leagues, Dahl belongs on watch lists until he proves he can handle big league pitching.
