After being hospitalized Sunday night, Denver Broncos’ head coach Gary Kubiak will miss  Week 6.

The Denver Broncos dropped from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 23-16 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, but more serious new surfaced after the game. After finishing his media availability, head coach Gary Kubiak was taken to the hospital with what was classified as “flu-like symptoms.” He was later specifically diagnosed with a “complex migraine condition”, and Kubiak was released from the hospital Monday afternoon.

Kubiak’s status for Week 6 against the San Diego Chargers, particularly with a short week ahead of a Thursday night game, was immediately in doubt. Now there’s some official clarity.

DeCamillis seems like an odd choice to take over as interim head coach, with long-time Kubiak assistant Rick Dennison and former NFL head coach Wade Phillips on Denver’s coaching staff as offensive and defensive coordinator respectively. But DeCamillis does have ample experience on an NFL sideline, working in the league continuously since 1988, and it’s hopefully only a one-game thing.

This is not the first time Kubiak has dealt with a health issue over the course of a game. As head coach of the Houston Texans in 2013, he suffered a transient ischemic attack at halftime of a game that caused him to collapse while walking to the locker room. Coincidentally, Phillips was also Kubiak’s defensive coordinator back then and took over as acting head coach for the rest of that game against Indianapolis.

Broncos’ general manager John Elway said Kubiak will take the week off and return to the team next Monday. So it seems likely he would have missed this week’s game, probably on a doctor’s order, even it is was going to be played on a typical Sunday. Kubiak may not miss any more games beyond this week, but he will surely be asked about his health when he’s available to the media heading into Week 7.
