Derek Carr suffered a broken right fibula on Christmas Eve, and now there’s audio of the moment it happened.

The Oakland Raiders hung on to win last Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts, and with a 12-3 record they could earn a first-round bye in the AFC playoffs. But quarterback Derek Carr suffered a broken right fibula in the game, and he’s out until further notice with only a long-shot chance to return for the Super Bowl if the Raiders get there.

Carr happened to be wearing a microphone during last Saturday’s game, apparently in a coincidence of luck from a certain perspective. So now, we have audio of the moment Carr’s broken leg happened. (Hint: jump to around the 3:25 mark to see the play in question, followed by Carr’s reaction and the further aftermath on the field)

Practically immediately after going down with a sack Carr declared definitively “it’s broke, it’s broke” regarding his right leg, and of course he ended up being right on. Carr’s words were also clearly captured via a close-up by the CBS television cameras on replay after the injury, albeit without the benefit of audio, but it was a very easy lip-read to decipher.

Carr is expected to miss 6-8 weeks after undergoing surgery on his leg earlier this week, which points to his outside chance to return in time for the Super Bowl. But Matt McGloin is all but certain to be the Raiders’ starting quarterback for the rest of this season, barring his own significant injury. So if Carr’s playing status is even a conversation heading into Super Bowl LI, that will be a major, positive development for Oakland and head coach Jack Del Rio.
