With the speculation about his future set to ramp up, Tony Romo may be narrowing down to a few teams he’d like to land with.

It’s a foregone conclusion Tony Romo has played his last snap for the Dallas Cowboys, with Dak Prescott proving more than capable of taking the baton as the starting quarterback. A trade could be coming, or Romo may ask to be released so he can pick his new team, and nearly any team in anything resembling win-now mode seems sure to have some interest in him.

The Houston Texans have been thought of a potential landing spot for Romo, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Network has reported to the contrary. There will still be plenty of options for Romo looking toward next season though, even as possible suitors fall by the wayside, and he may be narrowing down to a handful of teams he would like to play for.

According to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, Romo wants to play against the Cowboys in 2017. The revenge angle is cute, but let’s play along and look at the Cowboys’ schedule next season.

The NFC East and AFC West play each other in 2017, so Romo’s rumored desired landing spot –the Denver Broncos– and a team in need of a quarterback upgrade before too long –the Kansas City Chiefs– stand out. If the Washington Redskins wind up letting Kirk Cousins enter the free agent market, they could have interest in Romo and the Cowboys-Redskins rivalry would get a fresh layer of intrigue. The San Francisco 49ers, with new leadership in place at head coach and general manager to grab Romo’s attention, may be in the market for a veteran quarterback this offseason.

But the most interesting possible new team for Romo on Dallas’ 2017 schedule is the Arizona Cardinals. It’s not clear if Carson Palmer will return next season, to the point rumors he has sold his house and pulled his kids out of school in Arizona became a story on Wednesday. The Cardinals apparently want an answer from Palmer one way or the other by the middle of this month, so their offseason plan can take shape.

The Cowboys would surely rather trade Romo, if only to recoup something of value for him. But he ultimately holds the cards if he’d rather be released, and if he sticks to his rumored criteria one of five teams will have Romo under center next season.
