Pre-NFL Draft speculation and rumors are ramping up, but is Davis Webb actually the best quarterback in this year’s class?

Depending on what you look for in a quarterback, or what you deem most important, and argument can be made for Mitch Trubisky, Deshaun Watson, DeShone Kizer or Patrick Mahomes as the best signal caller in the 2017 draft class. Davis Webb was named Most Outstanding Player of the Senior Bowl, so he will go into the upcoming NFL Combine with some positive momentum.

Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network recently did an “Ask 5” of NFL executives posing a question-“What quarterback would you pursue this offseason?” A couple usual suspects of potentially available options were mentioned-Kirk Cousins and Tony Romo (twice), as well as Cincinnati Bengals backup quarterback A.J. McCarron. But one person, labeled as “Executive 4”, went outside the box.

"Executive 4: Davis Webb“If I were a team like Cleveland, I would take impact players at (pick Nos.) 1 and 12 and then trade back into the bottom of the first round for Davis Webb. I think he will end up being the best quarterback of this draft class.”"

Webb has been gaining buzz as a potential second-round pick, but it’s an incredible reach to say he will be the best quarterback in this year’s draft class. He was very productive in his lone season at Cal though, throwing for 4,295 yards and 37 touchdowns, with the strong arm and size (6-foot-5, 209 pounds) scouts will notice.

But Webb previously played at Texas Tech, and moved on to a similar “Air Raid” offensive system at Cal. So the same inflated production and scheme questions that surround Mahomes as he moves to the next level also apply to Webb.

He could be a late-riser through the rest of the pre-draft process, but Webb looks like a Day 2 pick come late-April. As with any quarterback the team he lands with will go a long way toward determining his success as a pro, but at the very least Webb will not be the Dak Prescott of 2017.
