It’s never good for a backup quarterback to make off-field news, but Trevone Boykin has done it.

NFL teams worry about their players, particularly those with a history of poor judgement, during the time between key points on the offseason calendar. Offseason practices will not start for awhile, so now is one of those times. Trevone Boykin has given the Seattle Seahawks cause for concern.

Early Monday morning, according to the FOX television station in Dallas, was arrested for marijuana possession and public intoxication after a car crashed into a bar in Uptown Dallas. Boykin was not driving the vehicle, but the accident reportedly injured several pedestrians before obviously causing damage to the bar itself and injuring the bartender. The woman driving was reportedly cited for two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle-serious bodily injury, a felony 3 charge.

Boykin had a brush with the law back in December 2015, while the quarterback at TCU, as he was involved in a bar fight and hit an officer. He was then suspended for the Alamo Bowl, and Boykin is on probation stemming from the incident.

The Seahawks signed Boykin as an undrafted free agent in 2016, and he beat out veteran Tarvaris Jackson for the job backing up Russell Wilson. In six games as a rookie, Boykin completed 13 of 18 passes for 145 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

If he winds up facing a suspension from the NFL, or even if he doesn’t, the Seahawks can easily move on quickly from Boykin and find another backup quarterback. A reunion with Jackson can’t be ruled out, or a turn toward a veteran who was on a team and saw the field last year could be on the radar. In that latter scenario, a quarterback who has played in the NFC West and has a similar skill set to Wilson looks like an easy fit.
