Tony Romo will attempt to qualify for the 117th U.S. Open at Erin Hills.

Back in 2011, Tony Romo attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open but had to cut that attempt short due to offseason workouts for the Dallas Cowboys. Well, that’s not really a problem anymore, is it?

Just about a month after retiring from the NFL and taking a job in the booth with CBS, the 37-year-old Romo, who actually is a very talented golfer, is one of approximately 9,000 golfers vying for 51 exempt spots at the 117th U.S. Open, which will take place this year at Erin Hills in Wisconsin. But before he can even think about playing alongside the best players in the world, he’ll first have to compete this upcoming Monday against 116 others in an 18-hole local qualifier at Split Rail Links and Golf Club, which is about 50 miles west of Dallas.

If Romo were to finish in the top seven on the links-style layout, he would then advance to a sectional qualifier, where only two players advance, on Monday, June 5 for the opportunity to move on to Erin Hills. Romo advanced to the 36-hole sectionals in 2010 and shot an impressive opening-round 71 but withdrew during the afternoon round after multiple weather delays.

A string of injuries cost Romo his job with the Cowboys and ultimately his place as a starting quarterback in the NFL, with the most recent being a back injury during last year’s preseason, not the type of injury that tends to go well with golf (just ask Tiger Woods … what, too soon?) but Romo is ready to tee it up and on a links-style course, if you can putt the ball well, you can get away with a few errant shots here and there.

Hey, he’s gotta fill that empty offseason doing something, right? Or maybe he’s got something else to prove after not getting in the game for the Dallas Mavericks.
