Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Jameson Taillon was recently placed on the disabled list, but the severity of his health issue has ramped up.
After two lost seasons post-Tommy John surgery, Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Jameson Taillon acquitted himself solidly in his first taste of big league action last year (3.38 ERA over 18 starts; 7.4 K/9 and 1.5 BB/9). Through six starts this year, the second overall pick in the 2010 draft has a 3.31 ERA with solid peripheral ratios (7.6 K/9, 3.3 BB/9).
Taillon allowed six runs during his latest outing last Wednesday, then he was placed on the 10-day disabled list with groin discomfort on Saturday. On Monday, the news got worse.
After reporting an abnormality to the Pirates’ team doctors, Taillon consulted with Dr.. John Lyne at Allegheny General Hospital over the weekend. A diagnosis beyond a simple groin issue came, and Taillon has had surgery for suspected testicular cancer.
Jameson Taillon had surgery for suspected testicular cancer this morning. The timeline for his return, obviously, is unclear at this point.

Taillon’s timeline for a return to the mound is obviously unclear, but that takes a clear backseat to his health. Finding a possibility of cancer so quickly has to be a good thing, and Taillon posted a statement about his situation on Twitter .

The possibly Eastern Conference Finals bound (?) Pittsburgh Penguins passed along their regards to Taillon.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Jameson Taillon and the Pirates organization.

It’s obviously a very private situation, with no obligation to confirm any speculation publicly, but Taillon seemed to suggest he has had a testicle removed. His recommended treatment plan is pending further testing, but let’s hope that’s the end of it and Taillon can get on the road to recovery as soon as possible.
