The Browns traded up in the draft to get tight end David Njoku, and with a great catch at OTAs he showed a reason why.

David Njoku rose up draft boards after a strong showing at the NFL Combine, all the way into being a potential first-round pick. He was ultimately the third tight end off the board, behind O.J. Howard and Evan Engram, after the Cleveland Browns traded up with the Green Bay Packers to get Njoku at No. 29 overall.

The Browns think so highly of Njoku that they followed up drafting him by immediately cutting tight end Gary Barnidge, who had 79 catches for 1,043 yards and nine touchdowns in 2015 with a respectable 55-reception follow-up last season. During OTAs this week, Njoku offered a glimpse of his immense talent.

That kind of jumping catch would impressive if a wide receiver did it, let alone someone Njoku’s size (6-foot-4, 246 pounds). He also switched hands with the ball, which is more a show-off move than anything important as an athletic display.

Njoku is Cleveland’s No. 1 tight end essentially by default at this point, and it’s worth noting he caught this pass from fellow rookie DeShone Kizer. Both guys could start Week 1 this year, so the Browns may have a promising quarterback-tight end tandem right from the start and for a long time to come.

There is a great immediate opportunity ahead of Njoku in Cleveland, with no substantial threat to a starting role and few other good options for whoever is under center. He will have to earn it by also proving he can handle little things like blocking , and rookie tight ends generally aren’t great right away. But Njoku is going to be hard to ignore based on his upside, and he showed some of it with this fantastic catch.
