Rangers OF Nomar Mazara dents dugout wall with foul ball (video)

After a hard foul ball into his team’s dugout on Saturday, Rangers outfielder Nomar Mazara may get a bill from the Washington Nationals.

The Texas Rangers beat the Washington Nationals 6-3 on Saturday, and left fielder Nomar Mazara went 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a walk and a run scored. The RBI was a crucial one in the top of the ninth inning, tying the score at 3. He was also on base for catcher Robinson Chirinos’ game-winning three-run home run in the top of 11th inning.

Mazara’s third-to-last plate appearance of the game came in the seventh inning, against Nationals’ reliever Matt Albers. He fouled a 1-2 pitch hard into the Rangers’ dugout, sending teammates scurrying to find safe cover. Luckily no players were struck, which fellow outfielder Shin-Soo Choo signified with a surrendering wave of a white towel as he left his seat. But the dugout did not escape unscathed.

Albers’ 94 MPH offering surely came off Mazara’s bat at over 100 MPH. So the poor dugout wall really stood no chance, under direct attack from that kind of significant exit velocity and a flat launch angle. Someone with some level of professional expertise will probably have to fix that bit of sheet rock and maybe already has. The visiting clubhouse guy at Nationals Park should pull a prank, and procure a fake repair bill with team letterhead for Mazara to settle up on when he arrives at the ballpark on Sunday.

Mazara is having a solid second big league season a little over two months in, with a .292/.358/.463 slash-line, seven home runs, 40 RBI and 27 runs scored through Saturday’s game. This foul ball for a dugout dent may stand for awhile as a fun moment though, to break up the grind of a long season.
