Isiah Thomas has been an easy punch line since his playing days ended, and he offered more fodder on Saturday night.

A busy offseason for the Minnesota Timberwolves continued on Saturday, with a reported agreement in place with Jamal Crawford once he clears waivers. So head coach/team president Tom Thibodeau was an obvious interview guest during Saturday’s Summer League game against the Toronto Raptors.

Thibodeau joined NBA TV’s broadcast during the third quarter of Minnesota’s loss and offered his view of things. Isiah Thomas worked color commentary for the game, with a mix of useless and interesting anecdotes to break up the monotony of a summer league contest.

Thomas is only a part-time analyst for NBA TV/TNT, with his primary job serving as president of the New York Liberty. He obviously doesn’t call games very often, so there are some little things he can get a pass on. On that note, he offered a funny moment during Thibodeau’s interview.

I would guess it’s common practice for a broadcaster to mute themselves with the “cough” button when he or she feels one (or something similar) coming on. Thomas attempted to do it, failed, and also pressed the wrong button to briefly mute Thibodeau’s microphone. Very little of what the Timberwolves’ coach had to say was actually missed by the mute, but Thomas served up a distraction by coughing loudly into his own still-open microphone.

Thomas has become an easy punch line since his playing career with the Detroit Pistons ended, with failures at virtually every stop along the way. Not much, if anything, will be widely remembered for Toronto’s 97-72 win over Minnesota in a 2017 Vegas summer league game. But Thomas gave us some unintended comedy and something for social media to run with for a while.
