Duron Carter has found a home in the CFL, but he showed NFL-level skill with a great catch Saturday night.

As the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter, Duron Carter seems tailor-made to be an NFL wide receiver. But academic issues led to him jumping around in college, and outside of a practice squad stint with the Indianapolis Colts in 2015, Carter has played in the CFL.

After spending the 2013, 2014 and 2016 seasons with the Montreal Alouettes, with over 900 receiving yards in all three campaigns, Carter signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders for the 2017 season. Through four games he had 15 receptions for 153 yards and one touchdown, and the Roughriders were trailing the Toronto Argonauts 17-10 approaching halftime on Saturday night.

Saskatchewan quarterback Kevin Glenn pretty much had to take a shot to the end zone with less than 10 seconds to go in the half. Carter, standing at 6-foot-5, is a nice target for a jump ball.

Apparently, dad was watching.

Carter had a great game in Saskatchewan’s 38-27 home victory over Toronto, with nine receptions for 131 yards and two touchdowns. As it turned out, he wasn’t quite done filling the highlight reel after his one-handed touchdown grab.

Carter has had some issues with maturity in the CFL, including an overzealous touchdown celebration in 2016 that led to Ottawa Redblacks head coach Rick Campbell being knocked down. But he clearly looks the part of an NFL wide receiver, with the requisite skill set, and more showings like the one he had on Saturday night could bring renewed attention from teams.

Carter is still just 26 years old, so the door is not shut on getting another opportunity in the NFL. But any hope he would become a star is gone, and if he winds up staying in the CFL he wouldn’t be the first guy to forge a nice, long football career in Canada.
