Starting Pitching-Fantasy Baseball Spot Starters-June 2
Johan Santana made history last night becoming the first New York Met to throw a no-hitter. It was a magical performance for Johan as he threw a career-high 134 pitches to no hit the St. Louis Cardinals. There were plenty of other solid pitching performances turned in by David Price, Mike Leake, Felipe Paulino, Madison Bumgarner and Clay Buchholz.
If you owned one of the pitchers who struggled last night or just need a boost in starting pitching stats, here’s the best options from today’s pitching probables. Check out the picks, and then the results from the past week as you make your selections for today.
The Picks
Felix Doubront-Bos: (owned in 31.9% of ESPN leagues) A big part of the Red Sox resurgence has been improved starting pitching and Doubront is a part of that success. In his last four starts he hasn’t allowed more than two runs and has picked up three wins running his record to 5-2 on the year. His ERA for the year is 3.86 and he’s picked up 59 strikeouts in 56 innings. He’ll return to the field where he made his first MLB start taking a no-decision while holding the Jays to two runs over five innings at the start of the season.
Edinson Volquez-SD: (21.5%) Having a starter at Petco always is a good feeling and Volquez has shown he enjoys the spacious confines. Tonight at 7:15 he and the Padres host Daniel Hudson and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Volquez has a 3.46 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP through his first 11 starts but a lack of run support has his record at just 2-5. At home his ERA is 3.19 in his seven starts in San Diego, where he’ll take the mound tonight.
P.J. Walters-Min: (2.9%) Walters heads to the hill in Cleveland for his first start of the year. He has allowed two earned runs in three of his starts and three in the other. He’s pitched 27.1 innings and has a 2.96 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP and 19 strikeouts. He has struggled with control walking five in his last start, but overall Walters has been one of the Twins better starters. He’ll look to continue that today at 7:15 ET when he faces Josh Tomlin and the Tribe.
