AT&T National-Fantasy Golf Picks
After another dramatic golf tournament last weekend, the Travelers Championship produced another first time winner in Aussie Marc Leishman after a riveting finish at TPC River Highlands. This week the PGA Tour returns to the Congressional Country Club once again for the AT&T National. The AT&T has been played at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania the last two years but returns to the Washington D.C. area for this year’s July 4 weekend.
Last weekend was a good one for Boss of the Moss as he led our Fantasy CPR group (which you can still join) with 166 points. Reserve Master and Cracker Woods are tied atop the Segment standings with two of the summer weeks behind us, and MT Cupt is now 90 points clear of the field in the full season ranks. My Z-men entry again struggled with C-list picks with 0 points from the John’s Merrick and Huh over the weekend due to a MC and a MDF.
With just 10 weeks left, make sure you are saving starts if you need to for the end of the season with your FedEx Cup playoff favorites. This week’s tournament sits squarely between the U.S. and British Open which always means a solid field will show up for the tournement hosted by Tiger. AT&T and the PGA typically do a great job of honoring the sacrifice of our serviceman this weekend as well bringing a whole new level of drama to the course.
Here’s who I’m going with this week and why:
A-List
Jim Furyk-After stumbling down the stretch at Olympic Club two weeks ago, Furyk still has top 15’s in seven of his last nine starts. On this course, he’s been in the top 10 in this event all three times he’s participated making him a great pick to bounce back out of 16 A-list options this week.
K.J. Choi- Choi is coming off back-to-back top 20’s in the Memorial and US Open as he comes to the course where he picked up his seventh PGA Tour win in 2007 in the first AT&T at Congressional. He beat Steve Stricker by three that year and appears to be heating up as we come toward the playoffs which have historically been a good time of year for him.
B-List
Hunter Mahan-Hunter comes in off a career-best 61 which he shot on Sunday to come back to a t11 in Connecticut. He also has a great track record at Congressional with a t8 in ’07, a t12 in ’08, and a solo second in ’09. He’s not a surprise pick by any stretch but should be near the top on Sunday and would be the first three-time winner of the year if he’s celebrating on Sunday.
Dustin Johnson-After taking time off to heal his wrist, Johnson has finished in the top 20 at the Memorial, won the St. Jude, and barely missed the cut at the US Open. In last year’s US Open played at Congressional, he finished t23 so he should have a good comfort level and be able to use his length to his advantage on the 7,500+ yards on this year’s AT&T National layout.
Brian Davis- Davis t4 last week gave him seven top 25’s in his last 10 starts. Since missing the cut in his first two events, he’s gone 13-14 in making cuts with four top ten’s although he hasn’t finished higher than fourth in any tournament this season and is still in search of his first Tour win.
Tiger Woods-Woods is too good and has won this event and on this course too much to close him out. He won in ’09 at Congressional and comes back to reclaim his title. Woods is a solid choice to win but he may also miss the cut so I’ll leave him on my bench and see how the week starts for him and act accordingly.
C-List
Cameron Tringale- Tringale also finished the final round of the Travelers with a bogey-free round to close into a tie for 15th. Tringale Has been accurate and long off the tee which is what the course demands as well as picking up strokes gained from your pounding. Tringale has been good to me so I’m going with an old friend-Tringale, and someone new and trending like…
Greg Owen- Owne has finished in the top 11 in his last two tournaments and top 31 in his last four. He’s made 12 of 16 cuts and has had it going with the putter his last few rounds. I think Owen’s a fairly safe pick and should be around on Sunday.
