And the slide stops! Sullinger, a player who many viewed as a top 10 talent finally finds a home in Boston who severely needs size and takes the risk on Sullinger who was medically red flagged by multiple NBA doctors. At this point and time in the draft, there’s absolutely no reason not to take the risk on Sullinger, who could turn into an absolute steal for the Celtics down the road. Red flags or not, it’s a pick you have to make if you’re Boston.

Sullinger’s back was flagged by NBA doctors at the pre-draft combine, and it couldn’t have worked out better for the Celtics. Considered a top 10 pick for the last 24 months, Sullinger is the best post scorer in the class and a great rebounder, two areas in which Boston is sorely lacking. He’s lacking athleticism, obviously, sometimes struggles to score over length, and there are questions about his defensive ability, but the latter should be masked by Kevin Garnett and company. With Brandon Bass set to hit free agency, it wouldn’t shock if Sullinger – health permitting – starts opening night for the Cs. He’s a nice fit on this Boston roster given his offensive gifts, and could make a sizable impact his rookie season.

Sullinger could be the steal of the draft. He would’ve been a lottery pick last season, but he went back to Ohio State and I think he’ll be better for it. Rebounding is a skill that translates well to the NBA level, and he has a good offensive game. Sure there a back issues, but at pick No. 21, that risk does not outweigh the potential reward.

I’m not a huge proponent of Jared Sullinger. At 21st? I love the pick. Sullinger was a highly effective rebounder at the collegiate level which correlates pretty well with NBA success. He has a high basketball IQ and he can score with his back to the basket a lot more proficiently than anyone in his class. Athleticism and health issues aside, this is a nice value.
