2012 NBA Draft Grades: Trail Blazers Select Meyers Leonard
Pick 11: Portland Trail Blazers
Selection: Meyers Leonard
Quixem Ramirez- Air Alamo
I’ve been on record that I prefer Zeller over Leonard. That’s primarily because Zeller is much more polished and there is a dearth of data on Zeller. A lot less risky. That being said, Leonard could supersede Zeller’s production because of his athleticism. He already plays pretty well in the post, another plus. A bit of a project though.

After taking Lillard sixth, it makes sense that Portland opted for a big with their other lottery selection. Leonard is a great athlete and is a legitimate seven-footer, but was very inconsistent at Illinois and failed to lead them to the NCAA Tournament last season. He’s got a chance to be very good eventually, but the Blazers might have been better off selecting a player like UNC’s Tyler Zeller or John Henson, two prospects that would immediately help them next season. Leonard is a good fit next to Lamarcus Aldridge, though, and should he deliver on his potential will be a steal.

Bryan Rosa – A Royal Pain
Well, I know the Blazers were looking to go big but I thought they may go for a more skilled talent like Tyler Zeller. Leonard is a pretty big reach at 11, but as well all know, size goes quickly in the NBA Draft. Still, I think the Blazers had better options. Lots of potential, but, I question if he can reach it. No doubt a solid pick if he can though – true skilled 7 footers don’t exactly grow on trees.
Grade: C
Bryan Wendland-Roberto Gato
Leonard almost averaged a double-double as a sophomore at Illinois, and he’s a legit 7-footer. The Trail Blazers added some depth with this pick, and it doesn’t hurt that they drafted a guy who already has some skills, but also has a lot of room to grow. I think Portland could’ve gone a few other different ways (Henson?), but I think Leonard will at least be a nice role-player at the next level.
