Wyndham Championship – Fantasy Golf Picks
Rory McIlroy dominated the field to a historic level as he cruised to victory with a huge closing weekend last week at the PGA Championship. The field this week at the Wyndham Championship will be quite different as most of the big games will be absent from Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. They’ll be a lot of talk this week about the new greens and the redesigned course, but expect fairly low scores as usual this year as players prepare for the FedEx Cup playoffs which begin next week with the Barclays.
Last week in our Fantasy CPR group, Cracker Woods had a 200 point week to win the week and move up to eighth in the summer segment. Above Par still holds the segment lead with Squatney Leather in the overall lead. My entry reentered the top 10% in the worldwide rankings and moved up to seventh for the summer with a solid week thanks to Rory and Justin Rose who finished t3.
Here’s who I’m picking this week:
A List
Webb Simpson – In a thin group A with only 12 total options, you want to have Webb on your roster if you have the starts to play him. He’s the defending champ here and has been remarkably consistent all year. He missed the cut last week after a rough round one which was his first competitive round since early July. He had taken time off for the birth of his second child but seemed to have things back together shooting an even-par 72 in round two. Prior to his time off, Simpson finished t7 at the Greenbrier after winning the US Open.
Nick Watney – Watney is one of the bigger names in the tournament and is playing here trying to gain momentum for the FedEx Cup tournaments. He’s coming off a MC last week after an 82 in round two but had five straight top 25s before that including a 10th at the AT&T National and a t13 at the Deere.
B List
Tim Clark – After struggling at the beginning of the year, Clark has returned to form with back-to-back top 15’s. He finished t11 last week and has a top 10 in the past here at the Wyndham.
Bill Haas – In his last four tournaments, Haas’s worst finished is t33. He hasn’t had a top ten but seems to be in solid form and ready to contend for his second win of the year. (His first was the Northern Trust Open back in February).
David Toms – Length isn’t necessary at Sedgefield which means Toms could contend once again. He finished second in 2010 and t17 last year. He finished in the top 10 at the US Open and the Bridgestone before a t42 last week at Kiawah.
Ryan Moore – Moore won this tournament in 2009, missed the cut in 2010, and didn’t play here last year. He finished t8 in the John Deere Classic before missing the cut at the British and PGA Championships. He’s a long-shot but knows the course and has four top 10s this season.
C List
Carl Pettersson – After leading at the PGA, Pettersson was able to land his fourth top three finish of the season including his win at the RBC Heritage. He shares the course record here at Sedgefield with Arjun Atwal and Kevin Na and rode his second-round 61 to a win in 2008.
Josh Teater – Jason Dufner is an easy and sure-to-be-popular pick here and I have no problem with that pick. I’m going to go a little outside the box and go with Teater as a sleeper here. He’s a solid pick based on his history here with eight rounds all under par and two top 25’s in his two tournaments. In addition, Teater has been playing well with top 10’s in his last three starts and four consecutive made cuts.
