Best Surprising Wide Receivers from NFL Week one-Fantasy Football

Wide receiver is a deep position which means there are opportunities to pickup some serious points if you act smartly and quickly to get players getting and making the most of their opportunities.

With week one in the books, we’ve looked at QB, RB, and TE in earlier posts. In this post we’ll examine the best receivers who weren’t considered elite options but had week ones that indicate some promise for the rest of the season. If you can get these players on the waiver wire or through a trade, they should be an asset going forward.

Here’s my top surprise wide receiver from week one in the order I would rank them for the rest of the season:

Lance Moore- New Orleans: It’s not surprising that Moore was involved with the Saints passing game on Sunday. He’s almost universally owned, but iw worth inquiring on after his six-catch 120-yard opener. He, Jimmy Graham, and Marques Colston were all targeted about equally by Drew Brees which could mean WR2 status easily for Moore the rest of the season. Randall Cobb-Green Bay: Cobb could be in for a huge Thursday night and should be your top waiver claim in most formats if he’s left on the waiver wire. He caught all nine of his targets and went for 77 yards as well as returning a punt for 75 yards and a TD. Greg Jennings may miss Thursday night’s game against the Bears so look for Cobb and James Jones to have nice games as Aaron Rodgers and the Packers look to take out their frustrations from a week one loss on their division rivals.

Stephen Hill- New York Jets: Hill was the number one option in the Jets passing attack, although you could argue that position may not be all that valuable the rest of the season. Hill caught a pair of TDs against the Bills horrible defense on Sunday while catching five of his six targets for 89 yards. He’s stil unproven but has upside as he showed us yesterday.

Danny Amendola-St. Louis Rams: Amendola was clearly the number one target for Sam Bradford against Detroit and he converted five of his team-high nine targets into 70 yards. He’s a good PPR addition especially and is a serviceable WR3 as long as he consistently gets this many looks.

Andre Roberts-Arizona Cardinals: It wasn’t rookie Michael Floyd (0 catches) or Early Doucet who emerged as the Cardinals second option on Sunday; it was Roberts. He was targeted nine times and hauled in five catches for 54 yards and what turned out to be the game-winning TD. Whether Kevin Kolb or Jake Skelton starts, Roberts looks to have fantasy value as a WR3.

Andrew Hawkins-Cincinnati Bengals: The one positive from the Benglas thumping on Monday Night Football was how Hawkins looked like a weapon across from A.J. Green. Hawkins did almost all his damage after the catch but finished with eight catches and 86 yards. Especially in PPR leagues, Hawkins has serious potential.

Rod Streater-Oakland Raiders: On twitter ( @FantasyCPR ) before the game I predicted a big game for Streater. Well, he did get more targets than anyone not named Darren McFadden but could only catch four for 27 yards and a score. However, his 10 targets and the injury-plagued Raiders WR corps could make him a good option for the rest of the season.

Alshon Jeffery-Chicago Bears: Jeffery will get single coverage most of the time as teams try to take away Brandon Marshall from Jay Cutler and the Bears. Jeffery should become the starter in the next few weeks and showed playmaking ability on his 42 yard touchdown as part of his three catches for 80 yards in his NFL debut.

Aldrick Robinson-Washington Redskins: Robinson had four catches on six targets for a touchdown and 52 yards. If Pierre Garcon misses time, Robinson will become a huge part of the offense. If he and RG III develop a solid connection, Robinson could be the ultimate sleeper pickup from week one.

Donnie Avery-Indianapolis Colts: While many people will be jumping all over Reggie Wayne and rightly so after his 135 yard day in the opener, Donnie Avery has value too since he got eight loks and caught three passes for 37 yards and a touchdown. He looks to be the second receiver in the Indy offense while Austin Collie is out and could have value at least as a bye week fill in later this season.
