It has been a long ride this season, but if you’re still with me, that can only mean good things folks. Depending on your league, the championship either starts on Monday or the following week. So there is no time to mess around. Players are dropping like flies from other owners so be sure to check the free agent pool each day. But there are actually many valuable players out there who could make a deep impact on your championship hunt. Here’s 10 quality guys who have some great potential to put up some big numbers these next two weeks.
1 and 2. A.J. Griffin, OAK SP, Dan Straily, OAK SP – This two-headed monster is now back in Oakland and all healthy. Griffin is back to his typical form after being hurt, and Straily has returned from the minors. With McCarthy being out after that scary injury (glad to hear he’s doing well), I expect huge things out of both these guys. The A’s are for real. It’s September 13 and if you guys haven’t figured that out yet, there’s a problem. Griffin has posting quality numbers all season, and Straily has come out of nowhere to put up mega strikeout numbers. The A’s don’t have an easy schedule by any means to end the year, but both these dudes can pitch and I’d immediately grab them.

3. Andrew Cashner, SD SP – Talk about potential. This guy has it all. 100 mph fastball with some nasty off speed. That’s what Cashner is all about. Yes he’s on the Padres, but that doesn’t mean he still can’t produce. Coming off an elbow injury, Cashner seems to be all clear. So expect some big strikeout numbers and hopefully some sneaky wins as well.
4. Brett Lawrie, TOR 3B – I’m a big fan of Lawrie. He plays the game hard. Hustles out each ground ball. Loves to get dirty. Wears his emotion on his sleeves. If I was making a lineup, those are the people I put in there. However, this is fantasy and that doesn’t matter. Luckily for Lawrie, the kid can hit a little bit. Grab him before someone else does.
5. John Lannan, WSH SP – No he’s not Stephen Strasburg. But now he’s taking the place of him in the rotation on the best team in the National League. That’s a pretty good place to be. Especially on your squad. Lannan is a crafty lefty and gets productive outings quite often. I think he can be very valuable in a matchup.
6. Darin Ruf, PHI 1B/OF – 38 home runs. Yes you read that right. Ruf has obliterated the ball in the Phillies’ farm system and he’s finally got the call to the bigs. Ruf will see some time in the outfield and may get some at 1st too. His power is too much to resist if he’s in the lineup.
August 10, 2012; Toronto, ON, CANADA; Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Anthony Gose (43) singles in the eighth inning against the New York Yankees at the Rogers Centre. New York defeated Toronto 10-4. Mandatory Credit: John E. Sokolowski-US PRESSWIRE
7. Anthony Gose, TOR OF – I spotlighted him earlier in the season during his initial call-up, but he didn’t give me too much love. After going back to the minors, Gose has found himself back in Toronto and is playing quite well. He gets on base a lot and makes things happen. Guys like that are valuable fantasy players.
8. Wily Peralta, MIL SP – No flash here, just pure numbers. The Brewers are silently approaching the top of the wild card standings and Peralta has been a big contributor the last week. If they are going to really make a big push at this, Peralta is a guy to look for.
9. Rob Brantly, MIA C – Catchers aren’t the deepest of positions to say the least, and this baby face in Miami has shown a little life lately. After being traded from Detroit, Brantly got a shot with the Marlins but didn’t take full advantage of it. His past few games have been quite solid so he could provide some big hits down the stretch.
10. Kurt Suzuki, WSH C – The Nats are just plowing through the National League, but no one is giving any credit to their horse behind the dish. After picking him up midseason, Suzuki didn’t show to much live. But these past few weeks, he has been on fire so give him a look if you need a catcher.
Hello, Waiver Wire!
Sorry if you were looking for some big news on whether you should hang on to a player or not, but there should be no debating anymore. If you are in a non-keeper league, any player is droppable if you need a roster spot. Keeper leagues, yes, you must still hold onto your big shots, but anyone else feel free to let go. No excuses left. Championship is now.
