Vijay Singh Meets With Commissioner And Tees It Up At Pebble Beach

Vijay Singh met with PGA Commissioner Tim Finchem on Wednesday afternoon regarding his status after he admitted to using Deer Antler Spray. Deer Antler Spray contains IGF-1 which is banned by all major sports leagues, including the PGA. No details were forthcoming from the meeting, and Singh refused to comment on the meeting.

IGF-1 is a Human Growth Hormone, which occurs naturally in the human body, and promotes human growth, allowing for faster recovery from practice sessions, as well as injuries. Singh admitted to using the substance, but was unaware that it was a banned substance. The use of this product should have been grounds for keeping Vijay out of competition until the matter was resolved, but like a lot of rules in golf, has no teeth.

The PGA tests players on a random basis, usually after they have signed their score cards, and are escorted to the restroom where they are required to produce a sample. The mandatory testing is largely being done to bring golfers into parity for the upcoming 2016 Olympics where golf will once again become a sanctioned event.

Vijay Singh, who turns 50 at the end of the month, will be eligible for the Champions Tour, but has said he wants to stay active on the regular tour because he thinks he can compete with the younger players. He finished in a tie for 20th place at  the Sony Open, and had a tie for 27th at Torrey Pines. He was scheduled to play at Phoenix last week, but left the facility after the stink arose regarding the Deer Spray. He will be playing this week at the Pebble Beach National ProAm.
