Fantasy Basketball Waiver Wire Watch-February 11

Sunday’s belong to the NBA in the sports world now with the NFL officially into the offseason. Yesterday didn’t disappoint as the Clippers pulled off a nice win in the early game over the Knicks, the Heat trounced the increasingly dysfunctional Lakers, and the Spurs complete a big comeback to beat the Nets. The late game was even entertaining as the high-scoring Rockets fell short against the Kings. Perhaps the best game of the day-or some would even say the season-wasn’t on national TV. The Celtics and Nuggets played a triple-overtime instant classic that the C’s pulled out before taking on the Bobcats tonight on weary legs. Three overtimes is always helpful to your fantasy numbers, but they weren’t the only contributors from yesterday’s nine games.

Whether your fantasy hoops team is in need of boost in a specific category or you’re looking to add your final role-player to bring your team the championship, there’s plenty of options on the waiver wire. We examine the players stepping up and contributing each day in our box score breakouts (archive here). Today’s list is filled with players worth watching on the waiver wire and adding if you need their help:

Jason Terry-Boston Celtics

One of the main reasons Boston was able to beat Denver was the 26 points they got from the JET who added three steals, an assist, and a pair of boards to performance. He hit five three-pointers and has had double-digits scoring in seven on his last eight games. He’s picked up his assist numbers a pit since the loss of Rondo and is still available in 54% of leagues if you need help with points, assists, and three’s and can afford a little hit in shooting percentages from time-to-time.

Gustavo Ayon-Orlando Magic

With the Magic looking for help from anywhere to break their 12-game losing streak, Ayon stepped up  with a season-high 16 points to go with 11 rebounds, six assists, a block, and a steal. He’s owned in less than 10% of ESPN leagues, and may be in line for more minutes if he continues production like last night’s. The Magic are searching, but I’d wait and see if Ayon is the answer before risking too much on the second year player out of Mexico.

Danny Green-San Antonio Spurs

Another good pickup if you need scoring and three’s, Green scored 14 last night giving him five in a row in double-figures and added two blocks, two steals, three rebounds, and four three-pointers. His three-point threat makes him a slightly better option than Jeff Green (no relation) for now. In his last five games he’s averaged 17.8 points, 4.4 three-pointers, 3.2 rebounds, 1.8 steals, 1.8 assists, and 1.4 blocks. He’s available in over 60% of leagues and is one of the top options on most waiver wires.

Jeff Green-Boston Celtics

Green continued his resurgent play last night in 42 minutes on the floor finishing with 17 points, four rebounds, three blocks, two steals, and an assist. He’s picked up his play and especially his scoring since the Rondo injury. Green should be one of the few C’s with the legs to play tonight, so expect a solid game from him and continued production going forward. He’s owned in only 17.7% of leagues and is worth a pickup if you need straight-up scoring with some decent block and assists numbers.

Austin Daye-Memphis Grizzlies

Daye was an overlooked part of the Tayshaun Prince-Rudy Gay trade but has put up back-to-back solid games for Memphis. He played 25 minutes last night hitting a pair of three’s on his way to 16 points, four board, an assist, and a block. He’s virtually unowned at this point, but if he get 20 minutes of playing time like last night he’ll have fantasy value.

John Lucas-Toronto Raptors

In just 20 minutes last night, Lucas dropped a season-high tying 19 points on 7-11 from the field connecting on all three of his three-pointers. He added a couple assists, but his main value in his current role will always be shooting and scoring. He’s not worth an add until he puts up more consistent production but keep an eye on him since he’s available in 99.9% of leagues.

John Salmons-Sacramento Kings

The Kings rotate wings quite a bit, but earlier in the season Salmons was consistently putting up solid numbers. He returned to that form last night dropping 23 points with six assists, a pair of steals, and four three-pointers against Houston. Keep an eye on his production to see if he can provide this kind of stat line more regularly. He’s only owned in 1.2% of leagues, so keep an eye on his lines to see if this kind of production can be more of a regular occurrence.
