It came as a bit of a surprise on Monday when the Kansas City Chiefs decided to use the franchise tag on offensive tackle Branden Albert right at the 4:00 p.m. ET deadline. It was initially expected that Albert would hit the free agent market which would clear the way for the Chiefs to select Luke Joeckel with the first-overall pick, but that was all in question after Albert got the tag.

Now that we are nearly a day past the franchise tag deadline, there is a report that could shine some light on what the Chiefs had in mind when they placed the tag on Albert.

According to a report from Sam Mellinger of Kansas City Star, there is a chance that the Chiefs could look to trade Albert.

The thought process behind trading Albert is that the team could be trying to recoup some of the draft picks that they lost in the trade for Alex Smith. If that really was the team’s intention with placing the tag on Albert, John Dorsey and Andy Reid could be even bigger winners leading up to the free agency period than we had initially thought.

With this latest rumor, you should still consider Texas A&M’s Luke Joeckel as the favorite to be selected first overall.
