Golf: The Puerto Rico Open…The Other Golf Tournament This Week

If you are a touring Golf Professional, and didn’t get an invitation to The WGC-Cadillac, you will more than likely be playing at the other golf  tournament this week. The Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com. The Puerto Rico Open tees of on Thursday morning at the Trump International Golf Course. That’s right…… The Trump Corporation will be hosting both golf events this weekend.

This tournament has a $3.5 Million dollar purse with the sinner taking home $630,000 dollars as well as 300 FedEx Cup points.

The Trump International Golf Course was originally designed in 2004 by Tom Kite, and went through a 2007-2008 redesign by Tom Kite. The course plays to a par of 72, and is 7569 yards in it’s current configuration. It has 62 sand bunkers to go along with 18 water hazards.

The most difficult hole at Trump International is the 459 yard par four 4th. It typically plays into the wind, and has bunkers guarding both sides of the fairway. A wood is usually needed to get home in two on this monster. It is the number one handicap hole, and during the 2011 tournament only produced 33 birdies in contrast to 88 bogeys. There were seven doubles, with two scores posted worse than double bogey.

Due to the schedule running against the WGC event at Doral, this is a good chance to catch some of the younger stars on the Web.com Tour in action against some of the brighter young stars on the PGA tour who don’t have enough status for the big tournament. This year will feature Jordan Spieth, and Patrick Cantalay, as well as Honda Classic second and third round leader, Luke Guthrie. Also in the field is Peter Uihlein, who has been active on the Sunshine Tour, and finished fourth last week at the Tshwane Open in South Africa.
