Abreu is being held in Summit County Jail on marijuana-trafficking charges.

It is a crushing loss for the Zips, who clinched their second straight Mid-American Conference regular-season title on Tuesday.

The junior guard is averaging 10.3 points per game, 6.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds on the season. Abreu is also shooting 81 percent from the free throw line. His presence will certainly be missed.

Not only is Abreu a key part of the team on the court, but he is one of the team’s biggest leaders on the floor.

Akron has a released a statement on Abreu’s arrest:

"Junior point guard Alex Abreu has been suspended from The University of Akron men’s basketball team indefinitely pending the outcome of a police investigation. The University is aware of the situation and is currently gathering more information. Inquiries regarding the investigation should be directed to the Akron Police Department."

How exactly did the bust go down?

That’s never a good look.

Akron’s chances of making the NCAA tournament with an automatic big take a serious hit with Abreu’s arrest and suspension. They will now need to make their way through the conference tournament and win without their starting point guard.

The Zips are trying to make the tournament for the third time in five years under coach Keith Dambrot, so Abreu’s selfish and stupid decision could ruin it for his teammates.
