Golf: Peter Uihlein Stays Busy In 2013
By Les Bailey
With golf fans focused on the Cadillac Championship this weekend, golfers who weren’t eligible for the the World Golf Championship event at Doral, are spending their weekend at the Puerto Rico Open. Among those on the leaderboard at The Trump Resort and Golf Course in Puerto Rico, is 23 year old Peter Uihlein. Uihlein has elected to take a different approach from his compatriots by getting his experience on the The European Tour. The former US Amateur Champion is currently third place in the “other tournament“.
Uihlein has had a busy spring, playing on the Sunshine Tour. After a slow start at The Mandella Championship where he missed the cut, has continued to hone his game, and continually get better with at solid fourth place finish at The Tshwane Open last week in South Africa. Peter is 21st in Challenge Tour Rankings, and 50th in Race To Dubai points. He is currently ranked 298th on the OWGR.
The youngster is keeping his nose to the grindstone, flying 9000 miles to India for the European Tour event next week. This of course, unless he finishes in the top ten at Puerto Rico, which would get him an invitation to Tampa next week.
"“That’ll be a short trek,” he joked."
"“It’s one of my favorite golf courses. I love Innisbrook,” Uihlein said about the Tampa course, which he played in 2011 on a sponsor’s exemption. “But as of right now, I’m scheduled to go to India, so we’ll see.”"
Uhlein knows he’s taking the rough road to get his career underway, but also knows if he continues to gain the experience of playing around the leaderboard on a week to week basis, the statistics, and his career will prosper.
"“Having the lead or being around the lead again is great,” Uihlein said. “It’s the way you’re going to get more comfortable at it. The only way you’re going to get more comfortable at it is to keep doing it. So hope I can keep playing well, and I’m excited.”"
