The Arizona Cardinals are entering a new era in their franchise, and one thing they need in addition to the numerous other upgrades, is a new running back. Currently the Cardinals are targeting Reggie Bush on the open market but they will likely look Rashard Mendenhall’s way if they swing and miss on signing Bush.

"The Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos are interested in Mendenhall, who fell into disfavor with coach Mike Tomlin last season and was suspended for one game for failing to show up for a game when he was inactive."

Some have questioned whether or not Mendenhall can be a feature back the way the Cardinals hope he can be. But it’s been pointed out numerous times that there’s still a lot of tread on his tires and that if he manages to stay healthy he might be able to provide a team with some real production. The question is will that production translate to talent or just plain old production.

Bush fits the Cardinals system perfectly but it’s largely believed that he’ll be ending up in Detroit with the Lions, meaning the Cardinals are going to have to look elsewhere for running back help. Lining themselves up for a run at Mendenhall makes sense but the question remains whether or not it’s a smart move or one of desperation.
