When the Kansas City Chiefs acquired quarterback Alex Smith in a trade from the San Francisco 49ers, it seemed like a certainty that Matt Cassel would be shipped out of town. As it turns out, the speculation was correct and Cassel was given his walking papers.

Now that Cassel is on the open market, it is time for him to find a new home and there is a chance he won’t be out of work for long.

According to multiple reports, the Minnesota Vikings are the favorites to sign the former New England Patriots back up and Chiefs starter. Minnesota is looking to add a player that can challenge and push former first-round pick Christian Ponder and Cassel would provide a solid, veteran option.

While Cassel may not be a major star at the quarterback position, he is a reliable back up and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him receive a chance at  the Vikings starting gig if Ponder continues to show a lack of improvement.
