Shiffrin burst on to the scene as a 17-year-old winning World Cup slalom races, and now she has captured the World Cup Slalom title just days after her 18th birthday.

Shiffrin got off to a slow start and fell more than a second behind World Cup overall champion Tina Maze of Slovenia, but she kept her focus and was able to overcome the deficit and come out as a champion.

“I was really overcome with emotions after the first run, being so far out,” Shiffrin said, according to the Associated Press. “Everyone just said, ‘What are you holding back for? Go out and have some fun and try to dance with the gates and see how fast you can go.’

“I didn’t know I could make up all that time in one run. It’s amazing. I am still trying to find my best skiing but this was my best run of the season.”

With her stunning victory, Shiffrin became the first American woman since Tamara McKinney in 1984 to win the slalom World Cup Crystal Globe. She is also the youngest woman to win the title since 1974.

It was an incredible moment for the young American who has a bright future and many more titles ahead of her.

As far as up-and-coming sports stars go, Mikaela Shiffrin is a name to watch.
