LPGA Golf: Beatriz Recari Grabs Lead at KIA Classic
By Les Bailey
Spain’s 25 year old
Beatriz Recari
shot a bogey free -5 under par 67 on Friday afternoon to take a one shot lead over LPGA Hall of Famer,
Karrie Webb
, and American,
Paula Creamer
in the
KIA Classic
at
The Aviara Golf Club
. Beatriz opened play on Thursday with a -3 under 69, and made five birdies on Friday at the Carlsbad, California golf course.
Beatriz Recari has been a model of consistency over the past year, making her 38th consecutive cut. She made 27 out of 27 cuts in 2012, and said she came into the 2013 season with a super good attitude. She is currently ranked 45th in Rolex points.
"“Well, definitely the consistency gave me a lot of confidence because that definitely showed me that I was on the right track and doing the right things,” said Recari. “Just in the winter I just focused on maybe raising the bar in my short game. I felt that maybe my short game wasn’t at the high level that I wanted to have last year. I took a lot of positives from last year. I didn’t win, which is something that I’m definitely looking forward to doing this year.”"
Paula Creamer, who is ranked #11 in Rolex points, has been struggling this year on the greens. She has fired her new putter, and in looking for an old familiar feeling, went back to her old two ball putter. She bested her Thursday 69, by firing a -4 under 68 on Friday to pull within one shot of the leader. Creamer ranked 34th in putts per greens in regulation and 44th in putting average last season and hopes the switch will prove some position change.
Karrie Webb, who is ranked 15th in Rolex points, followed her opening round 69, with a second round -2 under par 70, and is seeking her 39th LPGA Tour victory. Webb has had back to back T 18 finishes both in Singapore, and last week in Phoenix, at the Founders Cup.
"“It’s sort of come together,” said Webb. “Put some hard work in at the beginning of the week because I wasn’t super happy with the way I’ve been hitting it and watching video and emailing the video and lessons over the phone. But it’s nice to feel like I know where the ball’s going.”"
There is a group of five golfers that are two strokes back at -6 under par. They include, Three South Koreans, I.K. Kim, Haeji Kang, and Inbee Park, and two Americans that include, Kristie Kerr, and first round leader, Jane Park. Park shot even par 72 on Friday and was not able to improve her score.
