Rory McIlroy Adds Texas Open To His Schedule
By Les Bailey
Rory McIlroy did something on Friday afternoon at The Shell Houston Open that he hasn’t done since the new golf season started. He made the 36 hole cut, and will play the weekend. If you remember, The WGC-Cadillac is a no cut event. McIlroy has finally come to the same conclusion everyone else in world already knew, and that is, that his golf game needs more work. Based on that new knowledge, the 23-year-old Ulsterman has added The Valero Texas Open to his schedule for next week.
McIlroy shot a second round -2 under par 70 on Friday and barely got in under the wire so he could continue playing this weekend at Redstone. He is trying to get his game to the point where he can compete the following week at The Masters. His game looks to be close, and just need battle testing before he goes to Augusta to seek his third Major Championship, and first Green Jacket.
"“As I said, no one likes missing cuts and especially it’s my last one before the Masters,” McIlroy said. “Nice to have another couple of rounds, do some work on the range this afternoon and hopefully improve on the course that I’ve already done.”"
I think Rory McIlroy is very close to being ready. I have written before that he will overcome his equipment change, and all he needed was time to build his confidence in tournament conditions. I felt he should have played at either Tampa Bay, or Bay Hill, and was excited to see him finally commit to another opportunity before The Masters. I have been waiting all year for a Rory/Tiger Woods showdown, and who knows, maybe we will get a Sunday shoot out at Augusta.
