Report: Toronto Raptors expected to pick up GM Bryan Colangelo’s option year

Current Toronto Raptors general manager, Bryan Colangelo, could know as soon as Monday whether the Raptors decide to keep him around for another year, picking up the extension option in his contract.

Via The Toronto Sun:

"There are those who believe a decision will be made official by as early Monday.Unofficially, Colangelo’s option year is expected to be picked up, a route many in basketball circles had anticipated in the days leading up to the Raptors’ season finale."

If Colangelo’s contract is indeed picked up, it is expected the franchise would keep Raptors’ head coach, Dwane Casey, as well.

"Colangelo made it abundantly clear in his media availability following the Raptors’ season that Dwane Casey would be back, assuming Colangelo would be back."

The new executive of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE), Tim Leiweke, is expected to follow through Colangelo’s plan to continue to make the Raptors a playoff caliber, contending team after the Raptors missed out on the post-season for the past five years.

Leiweke has said to have ties with former Los Angeles Lakers hall of fame head coach, Phil Jackson, which Jackson stating he’s interested in a front office position with the franchise, however Jackson also has a good relationship with the Hansen, Balmer group in Seattle and is waiting to see how the situation there unfolds before making a final decision.

 After joining the Raptors from the Phoenix Suns in 2006, Colangelo won executive of the year the following year in 2007. He helped the Raptors consecutive playoff seeds in his first two years of his term with the Raptors, however Colangelo struggled to remain consistent. While many expected his tenure with the Raptors would be terminated, his job was ultimately saved when he managed to obtain Memphis Grizzlies sharpshooter, Rudy Gay, would was presumably the trade of the 2012-2013 NBA season.
