After causing some minor drama with the Chicago Bears, former first-round draft pick Gabe Carimi will be rejoining the Bears this week as the team kicks off mandatory minicamp. According to Jeff Dickerson of ESPN Chicago, Bears general manager Phil Emery said earlier last week that it was up to Carimi if he was going to show up to mini-camp or not and it appears that’s what’s going to happen.
“That’ll be up to Gabe,” Emery said, via ESPN Chicago. “You may want to ask him that. I’m assuming that he will be. Certainly he wants to play and wants to play well, and I think that’s why he’s approached his training that way. Those are questions only Gabe can answer.”
Carimi is answering those questions and he’s doing so by reportedly planning to show up this week at Bears camp. There had been some tension between the two sides when Carimi didn’t show up to Bears camp earlier and instead bolted to Arizona where he trained on his own. With the addition of Kyle Long in the draft this year, there was some wonder as to whether or not Carimi would even be on the team as the Bears reportedly considered cutting him due to his poor play.
He’s not out of the woods yet and he’ll have to fight for his starting job, but that looks like what he’s going to do. Former first-round offensive lineman Chris Williams lost his starting job and his roster spot last season due to poor play and better competition, so it’s not out of the question that the same can happen to Carimi.
