Pro Football hall of Famer Deacon Jones was the original NFL sack master and the man who coined the term. Jones sadly passed away earlier this month, but his legend in the league will live on after a new award has been announced. The league announced on Saturday that the Deacon Jones Award will be given out every season to the league’s sack leader.

The award will officially be announced at Deacon Jones’ memorial service.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com has more on the award, including when it will be presented and just who’s idea it was.

It is a great gesture from the league and it is always nice to see the NFL honoring their greats.

When it comes to sack artists, no one will ever compare to Deacon Jones, so it is only appropriate that he gets his name on the yearly honor.
