The 49ers have just signed punter and kick off specialist Colton Schmidt to a three year contract. He went undrafted throughout he 2013 NFL Draft. He will now have to compete in camp against Andy Lee, the current punter, as well as kicker Phil Dawson.

At his alma mater, UC Davis, Schmidt had 235 punts for 9,664 yards and a 41.1 punting average, a school-record. As well as being the punter, he was also the team’s kickoff specialist, with 34 touchbacks in 62 attempts.

He was named to first-team All-Big Sky Conference last year, as well as being named to the second team All-Great West Conference following his sophomore and junior seasons.

He could be just what the 49ers need to bolster the special teams, which would in effect make the team even better, which seems impossible with all of their acquisitions this offseason.
