New York Jets prefer to name quarterback sooner rather than later

The quarterback battle during New York Jets training camp will be one of the better and most intriguing competitions in the league, but don’t expect it to drag on throughout the entire preseason. If Jets head coach Rex Ryan gets his way, he will give both Mark Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith the chance to show they can be the guy while he looks to move quickly and make a decision.

“That’s something you want to do sooner rather than later,” Ryan said, via Pro Football Talk, “but I think the big thing is to make sure that there’s fair competition and you feel good about the decision. When I make that decision, clearly I’ll feel great about it. And not just me, but I’ll lean on several other people. But, it has to be the right decision.”

It will likely take a few games in to the preseason for the competition to play out, but we can expect a resolution before the final game.

“I think you’ve got to get them in live situations to really feel good about it and certainly we’ll do that,” Ryan said.

All signs point towards Sanchez getting the ball in Week One, but you cannot rule anything out with the Jets. If Geno Smith shows that he is learning the offense quickly, New York could choose to roll with the young rookie as they enter their rebuilding stage.
