The past two season have both been with sluggish 2-8 starts. They finished the 2012 season strong with a 5-1 record, but they can’t allow themselves to get into a hole, not in a tough division.

“Slow starts will get you fired, cut and [bring] change real quick for everyone,” wide receiver Smith said about head coach Ron Rivera..

“I’m more at the point now where if I was a female and 35, I’m looking to get pregnant and married tomorrow,” Smith said, via Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer. “So sense of urgency is an understatement.”

Smith was followed up with a question about whether his teammates shared that sense of urgency.

“There’s 90 guys (on the roster). By Sept. 7, there will be 53,” he said. “I went to public school. But the last time I checked, somebody ain’t going to make it. So they’ve got to decide real quick, by tomorrow morning, which guys will be part of the 53 and which guys will not be a part of it.”

The Panthers have finished both seasons with winning records down the stretch, the trick is doing that on the front of the season. Then the Panthers can build on a winning record and make a playoff push.
