The New York Jets have one of the most intriguing quarterback competitions in the NFL and head coach Rex Ryan has said that he will take his time when it comes to naming a starter at the position. However, when the team announced their first depth chart of the season, it was both Mark Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith that were atop the depth chart.

That’s right. Ryan named Sanchez and Smith as co-starters.

There is no one listed as the No. 2 quarterback, while Greg McElroy is listed at No. 3 and Matt Simms comes in at No. 4. You can see their initial depth chart here.

With the 30 teams that didn’t participate in the Hall of Fame Game this weekend preparing to kick off their preseason action, the Jets will get a better look at both signal-callers in game action. As things go on, a starter will finally be named in time for the start of the season.

Many reports say that Smith has been the more impressive quarterback throughout the practices, so we will have to see how he actually performs during the games.
