WWE superstar Darren Young announces he’s gay

WWE Superstar Darren Young was stopped by TMZ in LAX this morning, while coming into town for this weekend’s WWE Pay-Per-View spectacular Summerslam, and asked a seemingly innocent question. ‘Do you think a gay wrestler could be successful in the WWE?’ Then he dropped quite the bombshell on the reporter; he’s gay.

"Absolutely. Look at me. I’m a WWE Superstar, and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay,” he said. “And I’m happy. Very happy.”"

Now, this is sports entertainment after all, and there is always a small chance that this is part of the show. However, should this be true, this is a huge sign of progress within the WWE.

Soon after his ‘coming out’ TMZ caught up with fellow WWE Superstar John Cena and asked him about Young’s coming out, and the WWE Superstar was full of praise for his colleague.

"Good for him. That’s fantastic. I know Darren personally. Darren’s a great guy. That’s a very bold move for him. And congratulations for him for actually finally doing it.”"

Cena revealed that his older brother was gay, and he really didn’t think that this would have any affect on Young rising career within the WWE.

"It’s all about being professional, and Darren Young is a consummate professional,” Cena said. “For us, it’s entertainment, and if you’re entertaining you shouldn’t be judged by race, creed, color or sexuality … as long as you’re entertaining.”"

This morning, the WWE released a statement regarding Darren Young.

“On TMZ this morning, WWE Superstar Darren Young revealed to the WWE Universe that he is gay. WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar. Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A STAR anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation.”

If this is indeed truth, then I am very proud of Darren Young. It takes a strong person to come out like that so matter-of-factly in a sport like wrestling that is so testosterone-filled. This is most definitely a sign of progress.
