The mystery team that claimed outfielder David DeJesus has finally surfaced, which didn’t take long, maybe 10-15 minutes tops.
Now, as I wrote in my previous article about the Washington Nationals and David DeJesus, they were looking to avoid paying DeJesus the $2.5 million that was still owed to him.
They had a choice to either pay him, trade him or release him and let him go for nothing. They traded for him on Monday and released Roger Bernadina in the process so I was positive they would want to walk away with at least something.
The team that has placed a claim on David DeJesus happens to be the Tampa Bay Rays. Since it was a revocable waivers claim, the Nationals have the choice to pull DeJesus back, but I highly doubt that will be the case. DeJesus is hitting .248/.328/.399 with six home runs and 27 RBI’s in 86 games this season with the Chicago Cubs and a short trip with the Nationals.
The 33 year old fielder will provide good depth for the Rays if they do in fact acquire him. He could serve as a solid lead off hitter. The Rays also signed veteran outfielder Delmon Young to a minor league contract, who was released by the Phillies last Wednesday.
David DeJesus was claimed by Tampa Bay, according to a source.
