Boston Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has a compression fracture of the navicular bone in his right foot.  Red Sox manager John Farrell believes he will return before the end of the regular season, according to a report from ESPNBoston.com’s Gordon Edes.

The injury is the same that Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia suffered in 2010, and that outfielder Cody Ross suffered last season for Boston, all by fouling balls off their feet.

Ellsbury will be in a walking boot for a minimum of 5 days.

The injury occurred on August 28th, but Ellsbury started seven of the next eight games before aggravating the injury on Thursday night against the New York Yankees.  The injury was discovered by Dr. Tom Clanton in an examination in Denver on Sunday.

“I don’t think we’re looking at something that is just day to day here,” Red sox manager Farrell said Saturday, “But before we get into any kind of time frame, I think what’s probably best for all involved here is to wait until we get more conclusive evidence and information.”

Boston currently sits atop the American League East Division with an 8 game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays.  The Red Sox continued their series with the Yankees today, and lost 4-3, sans Ellsbury.
