Former St. Louis Rams and New York Jets offensive tackle Jason Smith has worked out with the San Francisco 49ers. This would make Smith’s third team this year if he was offered a contract. He has previously played for the New Orleans Saints and New York Jets this offseason.

Smith is a former second overall draft pick from the 2009 draft, since then he has played in 45 games and started 26. Not the numbers you’d expect from such a high draft pick.

The 49ers need depth at tackle desperately, they’re playing russian roulette of sorts. Out of the 8 offensive lineman they have on their roster only two are tackles: Joe Staley and Anthony Davis.

If one of them gets injured the 49ers could be in some dire straits and are looking to avoid that by adding a little protection and insurance by possibly signing Smith.

The backups they have listed on the roster are: Joe Looney, Daniel Kilgore, and Adam Snyder.
