According to Pro Football Talk, the Detroit Lions are investigating allegations of center Dominic Raiola making obscene and homophobic remarks to members of the University Wisconsin marching band. The band performed at Lambeau Field during the Lions’ 22-9 loss to the Green Bay Packers Sunday.

The Lions released a statement, per Pro Football Talk:

We are aware of the reports involving Dominic Raiola and the University of Wisconsin Marching Band,” the statement said. “Those reports are extremely inconsistent with the standard of behavior we expect from our players and from every member of our organization. We currently are gathering more information and will respond further when appropriate.

Blogger Tom Melton reported on his blog that Raiola called various members of the band fat and told them they sucked. And these are the more flattering things Raiola allegedly told the Wisconsin band.

While innocent until proven guilty still even while the government is shut down, Raiola has had a history of similar outburts. In 2008, the center was fined $7,500 by the Detroit Lions for flipping the bird to fans. In 2010, the Lions fined him $15,000 for an obscene comment towards a fan.

If Raiola even said half of what Melton described, the Lions need to suspend him outright. If the Lions don’t, the NFL should.
