The group play phase of the UEFA Champions League group play has come to an end. In Group A Manchester United got a win over Shakhtar Donetsk while Bayer Leverkusen got an important win over Real Sociedad. That moved Bayer Leverkusen into second and allowed them to advance.
In Group B, Real Madrid got a win but had already clinched first place. Galatasaray got a win over Juventus in a weather implicated game that made the result somewhat controversial. Galatasaray won and advanced sending Juventus to the Europa League.
In Group C, Paris Saint-Germain lost to Benfica who needed a win if they were going to advance. Unfortunately, Olympiakos also won giving both clubs 10 points. Olympiakos advanced on goal differential.
In Group D, Bayern Munich had basically locked down the first place spot and Manchester City had basically locked in second place. Manchester City defeated Munich but it wasn’t enough to catch up in the goal differential, so they remained in their respective positions in the table.
In Group E, Chelsea won to stay atop the table. Schalke 04 got a win over FC Basel to move ahead of them and into second place toa advance to the next round.
In Group F, things got crazy when Napoli took a 1-0 lead over Arsenal while Dortmund was tied with Marseille. Eventually, Dortmund got a late goal to win the game and advance ending Napoli’s Champions League campaign. Borussia Dortmund pulled level with Arsenal with 12 points but their win coupled with Arsenal’s loss gave them the goal advantage moving them into first place.
In Group G, Atletico Madrid had already advanced. Zenit needed a win or a FC Porto Loss to advance. They lost, but so did Porto allowing Zenit to move on to the next round.
In Group H, everything stayed put. Ajax Amsterdam needed a win over AC Milan to advance but that ended in a scoreless draw and Barcelona blew out Celtic.
