Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman has been shaving money off the payroll and freeing up salary cap space by asking center Ryan Kalil, running back Jonathan Stewart and linebacker Thomas Davis to restructure their contracts. Wide receiver Steve Smith could be the next player asked to be to take a pay cut.

From Pro Football Talk:

"A league source tells PFT that Smith hasn’t been approached by the team about taking a pay cut, and another source confirms that Smith and Gettleman didn’t talk when they were in the same room yesterday for Jordan Gross’ retirement press conference."

Throughout his post Mike Florio discusses the delicate balance general managers need to have when dealing with Smith. He describes a scene where things might be reaching a boiling point including an already frustrated Smith because the team has been talking about “evaluating” his role without actually talking to him.
