The New England Patriots are reportedly discussing restructuring defensive lineman Vince Wilfork’s contract with his representatives, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston.

From ESPN Boston:

"The New England Patriots have had recent discussions with representatives for defensive tackle Vince Wilfork about altering Wilfork’s contract, according to sources familiar with the talks."

The Patriots are trying to re-sign valuable free agents at skill positions like cornerback Aqib Talib and wide receiver Julian Edelman. Wilfork has a cap number of $11.6 million, which is  a for a 32-year-old defensive lineman, let alone one coming off an Achilles’ injury.

There is an upside to Wilfork restructuring his deal, an extension to lower the cap number and spread it across years would give him security beyond this season, Wilfork becomes a free agent after the 2014 season. An extension would allow him to end his career with the Patriots possibly.
