Beer Review Of The Week:
Samuel Smith’s India Ale
Two weeks ago I reviewed Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale and was pleased when it lived up to my lofty expectations. Both the Nut Brown and the India Ale were in a collector’s pack that I purchased along with their Oatmeal Stout (one of the best beers on the planet).
While my expectations for the Nut Brown were high I was significantly less excited about the India Ale. I figured it would just be a typical Indian Pale Ale, which is a style of beer that doesn’t usually make my personal favorite list. I was literally taken aback by how good this beer was. It was not what I was expecting at all. If you’ve been reading my weekly reviews for a while you may have noticed I really like balance in my beer.
I’m not a fan of overly bitter beers any more than I am overly sweet ones. This beer was a perfect combination of malts, hops, and a touch of fruity sweetness.
If you are an IPA fan and drink this hoping that it will taste like a typical IPA, you’ll be disappointed. It’s completely unique and incredibly drinkable. Normally I have to sip IPAs because of the high bitterness, but this was very easy to drink despite having a noticeable hop presence. I think almost any craft beer enthusiast would enjoy giving this one a try.
My Rating (1-10): 9
