Fantasy Baseball Thoughts: Week 2

Week two is in the books.  Try not to panic yet. If you have faith in your draft, keep the faith and hope the law of averages starts to correct any bad luck you have encountered this fantasy season.

Lets take a look at some fantasy baseball thoughts to keep in mind heading into week 3.

Batters

  • Do you remember when Adrian Gonzalez was healthy and was one of the best hitters in the game? It appears he might finally be healthy again.
  • Ditto for Carlos Beltran, but he probably will not stay healthy. The Yankees tend to shy away from players that do.
  • Jose Abreu is showing why he was able to put up better stats than Yasiel Puig and Yoenis Cespedes in Cuba.
  • Justin Upton, he’s no BJ.
  • Ryan Braun read my Week 1 review and got so mad he hit three home runs I one game. Lance Armstrong must be proud.
  • Brian Dozier could be a 20/20 guy at 2B this year, and hit .220?  Seems weird to me.
  • Anthony Rizzo is starting to show some confidence at the plate.
  • Albert Pujols showed some life, not $240 million worth of life, but I’m sure the Halos will take what they can get at this point.
  • Dee Gordon is doing what we expected Billy Hamilton to do. Gordon’s speed was never questioned, it was the other four tools…sounds like the same scouting report on Hamilton…uh oh Hamilton owners.
  • Colby Rasmus looks like he is starting a hot streak, and when he is on a hot streak it is a glorious feeling to own him in fantasy.
  • Speaking of hot streaks, Alexei Ramirez is the number one SS in fantasy right now.  This will not last, but enjoy it while it does.
  • Michael Cuddyer, slow and steady wins the race.
  • Adrian Beltre found his way to the DL, and Prince Fielder’s fantasy contributions thus far run parallel to someone on the DL.
  • A lot of people predicted Freddie Freeman to show some regression from last season, a lot people were wrong.
  • Clap along if you think Carlos Gomez batting lead-off is happiness to you.
  • Ben Zobrist puts the WAR in warrior…that’s lame.

Pitchers

  • Mark Buehrle?  Yovani Gallardo?  Aaron Harang?  What in the wide world of sports is gong on here?  Hey, if you have roster flexibility, why not.  I think I will have to talk about these guys more later in the week.
  • Jose Veras and Jim Johnson lost their jobs as closers.  Johnson was down this road last year and will probably get another shot. Jose Veras might not.
  • Matt Moore and Alex Cobb owners took a big hit as both landed on the DL, Moore is likely done for the year with Tommy John knocking at his door.
  • Scott Kazmir continues to dazzle, hopefully his tight triceps that forced him to leave a stellar outing yesterday is nothing serious.  Either way, check your waiver wire and pick him up if available.
  • Yordano. The Arm. Ventura.  Make sure to read the great piece by fellow Crackerjack Will Meadows. I love Yordano Ventura until the All-Star break, but that is when I sell high on young arms in re-draft leagues.
  • Spring training?  Ervin Santana don’t need no stinkin’ spring training.
  • Put Brandon Morrow on your watch list or scout team, or take a flier on him.  Dude is healthy and throwing a fastball at an average speed of 94.5 MPH.  Might as well enjoy it before he lands on the DL.
  • Speaking of healthy, pick up Michael Pineda then read this to find out why.
  • Pineda all ready owned in your league? Try Dan Straily, you’re welcome.
  • Chris Tillman, the most underrated pitcher in baseball.
  • Shelby Miller is lacking stuff and confidence right now, I’m not one to panic, but…if you put him on your trade block, and get $0.80 on the dollar, I might take it.
  • Danny Salazar looked like a thrower and not a pitcher this week.
  • I have concerns about Garrett Richards’ K/BB, but he is worth scouting.
  • Edinson Volquez may be following in A.J. Burnett and Francisco Liriano’s rejuvenation footsteps in Pittsburgh, keep an eye on him.
