Over the weekend, San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested for report of a false bomb report at LAX airport. That has him in hot water and a suspension could be coming his way from the NFL.

“The NFL is paying very, very close attention to this. They’re very disturbed by it,” Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman said. “I’ve talked to some league officials who say basically their plan is… they’re going to see what the 49ers do and they’re going to see how this plays out.”

Freeman goes on to lay out the NFL’s standard procedure of seeing how the team handles it to avoid having to step in. With that being said, Freeman reiterates that the league is monitoring the situation and could step in if they feel the 49ers aren’t doing enough given their player’s track record since 2012.

“So the 49ers’ Aldon Smith could be in deep trouble here. I would not be surprised if there was a significant suspension if this all turns out true,” Freeman says.
